The Picos de Europa National Park is a true natural paradise that extends over parts of the 3 Autonomous Communities of Spain – Asturias, León and Cantabria. Here are 3 great hiking trails, each starting in one of these provinces.
Best to try all 3 routes, I’m looking forward to your favorite;).
I already have mine, but would repeat any of them.
Here we go…!
ROUTE DEL CARES (León-Asturias)
Discover the unique natural landscape of the Picos de Europa on the ‘Cares’ itinerary, an 11 km long hiking track with low difficulty. There are beautiful postcard landscapes with impressive gorges carved between the rocks, path sections and bridges crossing the river Cares.
We start our hike in Caín (Leon) to arrive on Asturian lands, Poncebos. This route, known as the ‘Garganta Divina’ (divine canyon), can also be started from Asturias.
In `Cain’ we take the opportunity to present you one of our small rural mountain hotels to make your hike even more enjoyable! At Eigón Hotel you can feel right at home and relax after a long day.
Do not miss this experience!
Enjoy the hiking route Cares, stay at Hotel Eigón.
COVADONGA (Asturias)
One of the impressions you will never forget is the intense green of the valley of the Covadonga Lakes.
I recommend climbing from Canga de Onís to Covadonga, a place that you can´t miss visiting the National Park Picos de Europa.
In Covadonga, relax and enjoy the three beautiful lakes Lago Enol, Lago Ercina and Lago Brical, the latter is the smallest and can be semi-empty depending on the season.
After a walk among the lakes, you will find the Sanctuary of Covadonga and Santa Cueva with the Virgin of Covadonga, nestled in the rocks of the National Park.
What is more beautiful than enjoying an active day in the moutains and finishing it relaxing on the beach with sea views? Asturias makes it possible! `Ribadesella’ is only 30 minutes away from `Covadonga´.
In the beautiful boutique Hotel Villa Rosario, right on the promenade of Ribadesella, you can enjoy both, the lakes of Covadonga and listening to the waves in the evening.
You’ll love it!

FUENTE DÉ (Cantabria)
One of the fastest ways to get to the top of the Picos de Europa in just 4 minutes is the cable car from Fuente Dé, which easily crosses the altitude of 753 m.
Look forward to spectacular views from the Mirador del Valle (El Cable) platform if you are a traveler without vertigo.
From the summit, from El Cable, you have the opportunity to enjoy the Picos de Europa on a 11, 4 km long hiking trail (‘Horcados Rojos’).
To Fuente Dé you can return via a magnificent, 14.5 km long route with low difficulty. Or you can simply go downhill choosing the cable car.
Consult the timetables and prices of Fuente Dé cable car.
After a hike through the beautiful green National Park Picos de Europa nothing better than to rest in one of our charming hotels! In this typical Cantabrian inn you can experience the essence of this beautiful region and in summer refresh your body and soul with a bath in the outdoor pool.
Posada San Pelayo is just 20 minutes’ drive from Fuente Dé.
Your Cantabrian gate to the Picos de Europa is San Pelayo. Discover it.
Continue to enjoy the valley with out boutique hotels in Picos de Europa.
